Parent Workshop: It’s all about YOU!
On November 19th and 20th, EPATT parents came together to learn from one another at EPATT's first parent workshop of the year titled, "It's all about YOU!" During this workshop, parents (k-12th grade) were asked two simple questions, "What do you see your child doing after high school?" and "What do you, as a parent, need to do to help your child achieve that goal?" Parents got the opportunity to discuss their answers in small groups and heard from EPATT alumni parents whose children are currently attending college or have graduated.
Towards the end of the workshop, parents were asked one last question: "What will happen if nothing changes at home after today?" After, parents were shown alarming statistics on how children are currently doing in reading and math and were asked to develop a couple of action items that they can do to help their children not be part of those alarming statistics.
Overall feedback from participating parents was positive and resulted in many of them scheduling one-on-one meetings with EPATT staff to discuss their children's academic plans and goals.
This is what some parents came up with as their “next steps”:
I will start setting up an alarm to go over their school homework and managing her time on the phone.
I will manage and limit their screen time : phones, TV, Video Games, tablets, computer….
Schedule weekly time to touch base with my kids
Stay consistent with routines, follow up with teachers about my child’s progress.
Taking more time to talk about their future and help them find resources needed to achieve our goals.
I will make school work fun so they continue to learn at home and are happy about it.
Cut out social media.
Go home and establish a schedule to make time as a family to read or do more productive things together.
Taller para padres: ¡Se trata de USTED!
El 19 y 20 de noviembre, los padres de EPATT se reunieron para aprender unos de otros en el primer taller para padres del año de EPATT titulado: "¡Se trata de USTED!" Durante este taller, a los padres (k-12º grado) se les hicieron dos preguntas simples: "¿Qué ve haciendo a su hijo/a después de la high school (escuela secundaria)?" y "¿Qué necesita hacer usted, como padre/madre, para ayudar a su hijo/a lograr ese objetivo?" Los padres tuvieron la oportunidad de discutir sus respuestas en grupos pequeños y escucharon a los padres de ex-alumnos de EPATT cuyos hijos asisten actualmente a la universidad o se han graduado.
Hacia el final del taller, a los padres se les hizo una última pregunta: "¿Qué pasará si nada cambia en casa después de hoy?" Después, a los padres se les mostraron estadísticas alarmantes sobre cómo les está yendo actualmente a los estudiantes en lectura y matemáticas y se les pidió que desarrollaran unos elementos de acción que pueden hacer para ayudar a sus hijos/as a no ser parte de esas estadísticas alarmantes.
Los comentarios generals de los padres participantes fueron positiva y como resultado muchos de ellos programaron juntas individuales con el personal de EPATT para discutir los planes y metas académicas de sus hijos/as.
Esto es lo que algunos de los padres se les ocurrió como sus "próximos pasos":
Comenzaré a programar una alarma para revisar sus tareas y administrar su tiempo del teléfono.
Administraré y limitaré su tiempo de pantalla: teléfonos, TV, videojuegos, tablets, computadora....
Programaré tiempo semanal para tocar la base con mis hijos
Estaré de acuerdo con las rutinas, hare un juntas con los maestros sobre el progreso de mi hijo.
Tomar más tiempo para hablar sobre su futuro y ayudarlo a encontrar los recursos necesarios para lograr nuestros objetivos.
Haré que el trabajo escolar sea divertido para que continúen aprendiendo en casa y estén felices por ello.

Ir a casa y establecer un horario para hacer tiempo en familia para leer o hacer cosas más productivas juntos.
